Zebra Danio Enrichment: The Most Studied Fish in the World Lives in a Bare Box
The zebra danio in your tank is the zebrafish in a hundred thousand papers, and one of the smaller sub-literatures is about how badly the standard housing serves it. For everything else about them, see our complete Zebra Danio care guide.
Zebrafish larvae reared in enriched tanks had significantly higher survivorship than larvae in bare tanks. Adults from enriched tanks showed lower anxiety-related behaviour in a novel environment, and did not show the cortisol rise that control fish did. Bare tanks are a husbandry convenience, and the fish can tell.
What the Research Actually Says
The zebrafish welfare literature exists because compromised welfare distorts experimental results, which turns out to be an excellent reason to study it properly.
Survivorship. Lee and colleagues, in the Journal of Fish Biology, examined the effects of environmental enrichment on survivorship, growth, sex ratio and behaviour in laboratory zebrafish. Larvae reared in enriched tanks had significantly higher survivorship than those reared in bare tanks.
Anxiety and stress. Fish from enriched tanks displayed lower levels of anxiety-associated behaviour than fish from bare tanks when placed into a novel environment. Separately, fish housed with enrichment did not show the significant cortisol increases that control fish did.
What counts as enrichment here is modest. Gravel substrate and plants added to an otherwise bare tank. In some work, simple physical structure such as PVC tubes. This is not an elaborate intervention.
The framing the researchers themselves use is the striking part: laboratory zebrafish are usually kept in bare aquaria for ease of husbandry, and despite the species being intensely studied, little was known about how that housing affects welfare.
The survivorship result is the one that ought to travel furthest. Enrichment studies usually measure behaviour, which is arguable. This one measured how many fish were still alive, which is not.
Plant It
The tested intervention, and it is not demanding. Substrate and live planting instead of bare glass, plus driftwood for structure and surface.
Plant the sides and back, leave the middle open. Danios need cover and they need somewhere to sprint, and a tank that is all one or all the other misses half of it. Our tank setup guide covers the layout.
Length
Fast, restless, horizontally moving fish. A long tank is worth far more to them than a tall one of the same volume.
The commonest mistake with this species is a small cube. Danios in a short tank do laps, and the behaviour that gets described as energetic is a fish running out of tank.
A Real Group
Active shoaling fish. In small groups the chasing and nipping that danios do among themselves lands repeatedly on the same individual, and a bigger group spreads it out.

Flow
Stream fish. Danios come from moving water and use current, so a filter outlet aimed to produce some flow along the length of the tank gets used rather than avoided.
Not a torrent. Enough that there is a fast end and a slow end, and the fish get to choose, which is the same principle as a thermal gradient in a reptile enclosure.
Feeding
Fast, greedy surface feeders that will outcompete slower tankmates. Spread food across the surface rather than dropping it in one place.
Vary it with frozen and live foods, which produces a visibly more energetic response. Our feeding guide covers the diet.
Do Not Trade on Their Hardiness
Worth saying plainly. Zebra danios tolerate poor conditions better than most aquarium fish, which is why they get used to cycle tanks and why they end up in the smallest, barest setups in the hobby.

Priority Order
- Substrate and planting instead of a bare tank
- A long tank rather than a tall or cube one
- A group of eight or more
- Some directional flow, with a slower end
- Open swimming space through the middle
- Food spread across the surface, varied
- Not using them to cycle a tank
What Not to Do
Do not keep them in a bare tank, which is the specific thing the research argues against. Do not buy a cube for a horizontal sprinter. Do not keep three or four and watch one get chased. Are they really beginner fish?
They are hardy and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, which is not the same as thriving. Hardiness is why they end up in undersized bare tanks, and it is exactly the situation the enrichment research argues against.
