An aquarium looks like it depends on light. It actually depends on motion. The filter and any air pump keep the water surface moving, and that movement is what pulls oxygen in and lets carbon dioxide out. Kill the power and the tank isn't going dark for your fish, it's going still, and still water is the real emergency. Everything here, an outage, a vet ride, a full house move, comes back to the same three things: oxygen, temperature, and a filter that either keeps running or gets handled carefully when it doesn't. This applies broadly across freshwater fish, angelfish, tetras, livebearers, goldfish, oscars, and the rest, with axolotl-specific notes called out separately since axolotls breathe and tolerate temperature differently than a fish does.
What Actually Kills Fish in a Power Outage
Oxygen depletion is the fast risk. Once the filter stops, the surface agitation that drives gas exchange stops with it, and dissolved oxygen starts falling within a couple of hours, sooner in a heavily stocked or warm tank, since warmer water holds less oxygen to begin with. Temperature drift is the slower risk. Most home aquariums are insulated by their own volume and the surrounding room, so a house losing power for a few hours rarely swings the water enough to be dangerous for tropical or temperate fish. Waste buildup is the risk you create if you get either of the first two wrong, since food left uneaten with no filter running fouls water fast.

Do
- Aerate right away. A battery-powered air pump with an airstone is the cleanest fix, and it's worth owning one before you need it.
- No battery pump on hand, agitate the surface by hand: scoop water out with a cup or pitcher and pour it back in from a few inches up for a minute or two, repeated roughly every 10 to 15 minutes in a small tank and every 20 to 30 minutes in a larger one. It looks primitive and it genuinely works.
- Insulate the tank with towels, blankets, or a snug lid to hold in existing warmth, rather than introducing any new heat source near water and electronics.
- Unplug the filter deliberately rather than leaving it to sit dead in the water and restart itself the moment power returns.
- Check on the tank periodically rather than only at the start and end of the outage, fish gasping at the surface means aerate more often, not less.
Don't
- Don't feed. No food goes in until the filter is back and stable. Uneaten food is one more thing consuming oxygen and rotting in still water.
- Don't restart a filter that's been off for hours without checking it first. See the section below, it's the single most common mistake once power comes back.
- Don't add a space heater, heat lamp, or open flame near the tank to fight the cold. Oxygen loss is faster and more dangerous than the temperature drop for most species, and mixing heat sources with water and cords is its own hazard.
- Don't panic-swap large amounts of water. A big water change mid-outage adds stress and, if the replacement water isn't matched for temperature, a second problem on top of the first.
A stocked, well-established tank can generally coast through several hours without heat or filtration, as long as oxygen is being managed. Goldfish and koi tolerate cold better than tropical species, but they're also often kept at higher stocking densities, so the oxygen math matters just as much for them. Don't Just Flip the Filter Back On
This is the part people skip, and it's the part that causes the most post-outage crashes. A filter that's sat dead for many hours isn't neutral, it's a small sealed pocket where oxygen ran out and waste kept decomposing the whole time. Canister filters are the worst case since they're not open to the air at all, but even a hang-on-back filter builds up dead bacteria and trapped gunk in the media given enough hours. Flip the power back on without checking it, and all of that gets pushed straight into the tank at once, an ammonia spike and a slug of oxygen-poor water arriving right when your fish are already stressed.
Before restarting, open the filter and rinse the media in a bucket of the tank's own water, not tap water, which would kill the bacteria you're trying to save along with the bad stuff. If the outage ran a full day or more, test for ammonia and nitrite once things are running again and keep testing for a few days, since a weakened colony can take time to catch back up and problems sometimes show up days later. A well-cycled filter's bacteria live mostly on and inside the media, not in the water column, which is exactly why a filter that sat dead for hours still has something worth rinsing and saving rather than something to just hose down and toss.
Axolotls: The Emergency Runs in Reverse
Everything above assumes a fish that's more vulnerable to cold than heat. An axolotl flips that. Axolotls do best in cool water, generally kept well below what most tropical fish tanks run, and they're genuinely more at risk from a heat wave or a hot climate than from a cool room. If your power goes out in summer, or you're dealing with a hot spell regardless of the grid, the goal for an axolotl tank is keeping heat out, not holding heat in.
R. Loh, a veterinarian who presented on axolotl water quality at the WSAVA 2015 World Congress, puts the danger point at water sustained above 24°C (about 75°F), where signs include reduced appetite, ascites (fluid swelling in the abdomen), and uncontrollable floating. For a genuine emergency, that same source describes moving the axolotl to a dish in the refrigerator as a helpful stopgap while the main tank gets cooled, buying time by dropping the animal's metabolic demand rather than trying to chill the whole tank instantly.
For the tank itself, insulate it from ambient heat the way you'd insulate one from cold: close blinds during sunny hours, keep it away from windows and heat-producing equipment, and run the room as cool as you reasonably can. Bagging and Transporting Fish
A bag beats a rigid bucket for most short trips: a local drive, a trip to a new owner, a quick vet consult. It holds the fish in the dark, which is calming, and it flexes instead of sloshing violently on turns the way a half-full rigid container can. A bucket or tub with a tight lid earns its place on longer trips or when you're moving more water than a bag can reasonably hold, since it's harder to puncture and easier to aerate with a battery pump running inside it.
However you bag a fish, leave meaningful headspace above the water rather than filling the bag to the top. For most gill-breathing fish that space holds the air or oxygen that dissolves in at the surface. For a betta or other labyrinth fish, a fish that gulps air directly through an organ built for exactly that, the air gap matters even more, since it may use that pocket directly rather than relying only on gas exchange through the water. A roughly two-thirds water, one-third air split is standard for bettas, a bit more air than you'd leave for a fish that only breathes through its gills.
For anything longer than a short local drive, plain air in that headspace is usually enough for a few hours, but pure oxygen is genuinely standard practice once you're looking at a longer trip, an online order, or a multi-hour drive. It saturates the water with far more dissolved oxygen than atmospheric air can, the single biggest factor in how long a bagged fish stays healthy. Keep the bag out of direct sun, never in a hot car, and treat several hours as the point to start thinking about an insulated box around the bag rather than leaving it loose on a seat.
Moving Day: Keeping the Tank From Crashing
A full move is the outage and the transport problem happening at once, plus one more piece: the filter's bacterial colony has to survive being out of the tank, sometimes for hours. That colony lives mostly in and on the media itself, not floating free in the water, which means the media can travel separately from the tank and still carry the whole colony with it, as long as it stays wet.
Pack the sponge or cartridge in a sealed bag or tub filled with the tank's own water, never tap water and never left to dry out on a paper towel in the front seat. For a short move, that's usually enough. For a longer drive, a battery airstone dropped into the same bag or tub keeps the bacteria oxygenated the whole way, the same fix as an outage, just packed into a container instead of the tank. Set the filter back up as soon as the new tank is filled and the fish are back in, using that same reserved water rather than fresh tap water, so there's no gap where the colony sits idle. Handled this way, most moves don't need a fresh cycle at all, a very different outcome than starting a new goldfish tank from scratch. Bag or bucket the fish the same way you would for any transport, with an air gap and, for a longer drive, a battery pump or pure oxygen. Move fish last, after the new tank's water is dechlorinated and close to the old tank's temperature, and get them out of the bag as soon as reasonably possible rather than leaving them bagged while you finish setting up decor.
