A new tortoise or box turtle is not automatically safe to introduce to whatever chelonian already lives in your house, even if it looked perfectly healthy on pickup day. The reason is chelonian herpesvirus, testudinid herpesvirus in true tortoises and a related virus in box turtles, a disease that can sit quietly for months before it kills a large share of an exposed group. This is not only a "large collection" problem. It applies just as much to someone adding a second box turtle to a household that already has one, or a new Russian tortoise moving in next to an established sulcata. The fix is not complicated, but it does take real time, and skipping it is how one new animal turns into a group outbreak.

What Chelonian Herpesvirus Actually Is

Testudinid herpesvirus is a group of alpha herpesviruses documented across true tortoises, family Testudinidae. The European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZWV) lists Hermann's, Horsfield's (Russian), spur-thighed, and marginated tortoises, along with leopard, Argentine, desert, and pancake tortoises, among the species it has been confirmed in. That list covers the Testudo-genus species this site's Russian tortoise and sulcata tortoise guides already flag as needing careful screening, and it extends to red-footed tortoises as well.

Box turtles are a different case worth calling out clearly. They are not true tortoises, they belong to the pond turtle family, and research into eastern box turtle mortality events has identified their own, distinct herpesvirus, Terrapene herpesvirus 1, that has never been successfully isolated in culture the way the tortoise viruses have. In the same box turtle studies, a separate pathogen, ranavirus, shows up as the far more consistently documented cause of mass mortality, tied to outbreaks across at least eight states. In short, box turtles face their own version of this risk, and the better-studied culprit for them specifically is ranavirus rather than testudinid herpesvirus. The quarantine logic below applies to both problems either way, since both spread through carriers that look fine.

Why It's So Dangerous: The Carrier Problem

The virus is shed through oral secretions and most likely spreads by ingestion, according to EAZWV, which makes shared water dishes, substrate, and even hands moving between animals realistic transmission routes. There is no cure. Merck Veterinary Manual and EAZWV both describe treatment as supportive only, controlling secondary bacterial infection and, in some cases, applying antiviral medication to improve oral lesions, without clearing the virus itself. Animals that survive an infection are considered lifelong carriers, and a 2018 outbreak investigation published in PLOS ONE found that survivors became either intermittent or persistent shedders, with the highest rates of shedding recorded after hibernation, exactly the kind of stress event a newly settled pet also goes through.

That same outbreak paper is worth walking through, because it shows how easy this is to miss. The tortoise later identified as the outbreak's source had already completed a full year of quarantine after arriving at the facility, and showed no clinical signs for three years afterward beyond an occasional "wet nose" that nobody flagged as a problem. When the virus finally triggered an outbreak, 75 percent of the twenty tortoises it exposed died, fifteen animals. That figure describes one documented outbreak, not a universal rate, but it is a real, published number, and it happened despite quarantine time that most keepers would already consider generous. Time alone caught nothing here. Testing during that time would have.

Signs to Watch For

Nasal and ocular discharge, plaques or diphtheritic lesions on the tongue and hard palate, drooling, regurgitation, difficulty eating or swallowing, and lethargy are the signs most consistently listed by EAZWV. More severe cases progress to pneumonia or, less commonly, encephalitis, which shows up as neurological signs. Mild cases can look like nothing more than a touch of conjunctivitis, easy to write off as dust or a minor irritation. That gap, between what a genuinely infected but early or subclinical animal looks like and what an owner is watching for, is the entire reason quarantine has to run longer than "until it looks fine."

The Quarantine Protocol That Actually Works

EAZWV's recommendation for newly acquired tortoises is strict quarantine of a minimum of six months, with a full physical exam both before and after that period, and serological and virus-detection testing carried out during quarantine, with serology repeated at least once several weeks later since antibodies take time to develop after exposure. The breeding facility in the 2018 outbreak paper ran a full year of quarantine on new arrivals as its own standard practice. Six months to a year is the real range, not the two to four weeks that gets recommended for some other reptile diseases.

Inside that window, the practical setup matters as much as the calendar:

  • A genuinely separate room or airspace, not just a second tank in the same room as an established animal. Airborne and surface transmission both become easier to control this way.
  • Dedicated tools and dishes for the quarantined animal, food bowls, soak dishes, hides, cleaning brushes, that never cross over to an established tortoise's enclosure.
  • Handle and feed the new animal last in the daily routine, after every other reptile in the house has already been fed and handled for the day.
  • Wash hands or change gloves between the quarantined animal and any other reptile, every time, not only when it's convenient.
  • A vet visit at the start of quarantine, and where testing is accessible, PCR or serological screening rather than a physical exam alone, since a carrier can pass a hands-on exam with no findings at all.

A new tortoise that "looks totally normal" after three weeks has cleared almost none of this. It has cleared a fraction of the recommended window and none of the testing.

Other Pathogens That Make the Same Case

Herpesvirus is not the only reason quarantine matters, it is just the clearest example. Ranavirus (frog virus 3-like ranavirus) is documented as an asymptomatic-carrier disease in turtles, and in eastern box turtles specifically it is the pathogen most consistently tied to real mortality events, identified as the cause of death in outbreaks across multiple states between 2013 and 2015. Mycoplasma agassizii, the bacterium behind upper respiratory tract disease in tortoises, behaves the same way: research on captive tortoises in Italy found the organism in animals with no symptoms at all, concluding that "not only animals with upper respiratory disease should be considered as potentially infected," since a subclinical carrier can test positive while looking completely healthy. A herpesvirus, an iridovirus-relative, and a bacterium, three unrelated pathogen families, and all three share the same profile: a carrier that looks fine, no reliable way to rule it out by eye, and no cure once it takes hold. That pattern, repeated across every serious chelonian disease, is the actual case for quarantine as a default habit rather than an occasional precaution.
