Did you know? When threatened, hognose snakes will flatten their neck, hiss, lunge (mouth closed), and if that fails, flip over and play dead complete with open mouth and tongue hanging out!

- Hawaii, Kansas and New York City rule it out. Georgia, New York State and West Virginia ban only their native hognoses, not the western. Colorado allows captive-bred Western and Plains hognose with documentation from May 1, 2026, but not Eastern. California is legal without a permit.Legal guide →
- Enclosure
- About one square foot of floor per foot of snake. A 20-gallon equivalent (30x13x13 inches) minimum for a male, a 40-gallon (36x18x16) for a larger female, or a 2x2x2 foot PVC for either. Floor over height.Setup guide →
- Temperatures
- Basking 90 to 95°F, cool side 70 to 75°F, nights at room temperature but no colder than about 60°F, from a low-wattage halogen over the substrate on a dimming thermostat. The thermostat is not optional.Setup guide →
- Thermostat probe
- At the snake's level, never left up near the fixture reading room air. Over a basking bulb, follow the controller's instruction on probe placement and check the result with a separate thermometer.Heating guide →
- Humidity
- 30 to 50%, on the dry side. No misting the enclosure; one humid hide for shedding, moistened only as needed. Damp everywhere is respiratory infection and scale rot.Setup guide →
- Substrate
- 3 to 6 inches of dry, diggable soil and sand, about 70% soil-based to 30% reptile sand, or aspen or coconut fiber as the soil part. Kept dry.Setup guide →
- Where the digging goes
- Deep substrate on the cool end, basking surface on the warm end, cover at both, so it never trades the temperature it wants for the behavior it wants.Enrichment guide →
- Lighting
- Active by day, so a 12-hour cycle, and a low-output linear T5 UVB is increasingly recommended.Setup guide →
- Where to feed
- In a separate container, on frozen-thawed prey. Enthusiastic, messy eaters that swallow substrate with their food. After three refusals, scent the prey with tuna, salmon, or broth.Health guide →
- How much to feed
- Less activity than in the wild, and overfeeding shortens lives here. Match frequency and portion to the adult's activity, not the juvenile's growth schedule.Health guide →
- Weight checks
- Weigh weekly on a gram scale and keep a record of weight, meals, sheds and behavior. A sudden drop is the first thing to show a vet.Health guide →
- Handling
- Bites are rare and are feeding responses, so wash hands first and never handle right after a meal. Stay calm through the hood-and-hiss display rather than dropping the snake.Handling guide →
- Venom
- Rear-fanged and mildly venomous. Bites are uncommon and stay local: a quick bite often does nothing, while a snake that holds on or chews can cause marked swelling and bruising.Handling guide →

- 14 to 46 inches (36 to 117 cm) across the species; western hognoses, the usual pet, run 14 to 37 inches.
- Power outage

- Open-mouth breathing, wheezing, drooling or visible mucus, and lethargy
- A missed stool past the snake's usual gap after a meal, with bloating, lethargy, refused food or regurgitation
- Discolored or blistered belly scales that progress beyond mild discoloration
- Mites or internal parasites, which periodic fecal checks catch early, especially on a newly acquired snake
A reptile-experienced vet, found before you need one. A respiratory infection always needs a vet, since it needs antibiotics and won't resolve on its own. With impaction there is no fixed number of days: a missed stool with bloating, lethargy or refused food needs a vet, and severe cases sometimes require surgery.

How humid should a hognose snake enclosure be?
30 to 50% ambient, dry compared with most pet snakes. Rather than misting the whole enclosure, run one dedicated humid hide for shedding and add moisture only there.
Why are hognose snakes prone to impaction?
Hognoses are enthusiastic, somewhat messy eaters, and they're prone to swallowing substrate along with their food. Feeding in a separate container away from the loose substrate is the single most effective prevention. Learn your snake's usual gap between a meal and its stool. A missed stool past that gap, with bloating, lethargy or refused food, needs a vet, not more waiting.
Are Western hognose snakes dangerous to handle?
Not dangerous, but not harmless either. Bites are documented and uncommon, mostly from a hungry snake around feeding time, and the effects stay local. A quick bite often does nothing; a snake that holds on or chews can cause marked swelling and bruising. In the best-known case a keeper had swelling, bruising and mild cellulitis, no systemic effects, and a recovery that ran about five months.
