Common Tiger Salamander Health Issues

Tiger salamanders are hardy, and the issues that do show up trace back to feeding practices and substrate choice more than anything else, this species is an opportunistic eater in a way that genuinely shapes its health risks. Obesity

The most frequently cited problem in pet tiger salamanders. This species doesn't reliably self-regulate its own food intake, it's a genuinely opportunistic feeder that will keep eating what's offered. Manageable at home, limit fatty feeders like waxworms and pinky mice, and keep to an appropriate feeding schedule for an adult rather than a growing juvenile's pace, alongside providing an enriched enclosure that encourages some natural movement.

Substrate Impaction

This species lunges aggressively at food, and in the process can accidentally swallow small bits of substrate along with it, small bark fragments or gravel are the usual culprits. Always see a vet, this can become genuinely fatal if left untreated. Metabolic Bone Disease

From calcium or vitamin D3 deficiency. See a vet, and treat regular calcium dusting on feeder insects as a standard part of this species' diet, not an occasional extra.

Skin and Bacterial Infections, Including Chytrid Fungus

Red or discolored skin, abnormal shedding, a real change in behavior, and appetite loss, worth flagging specifically since this species is normally such a voracious eater that any drop in appetite is a genuine red flag. Always see a vet. Caused by poor hygiene, substrate that's either too wet or too dry, or a pathogen introduced by an animal that wasn't properly quarantined.

Parasites

Often carried by wild-caught feeders or wild-origin animals. A vet fecal exam is worth doing for peace of mind, especially given how commonly wild-caught stock shows up in this species' trade.

The Husbandry Pattern Worth Remembering

Overfeeding, especially with fatty prey, is directly responsible for the obesity that's genuinely the most common issue in this species. Loose or ingestible substrate causes impaction, one of the more serious risks here. And skipping calcium supplementation causes metabolic bone disease.
