Gargoyle Gecko Enrichment: Build Up, and Fill What You Build
The most common mistake with arboreal geckos is buying a tall enclosure and leaving the top two thirds empty. For everything else about the species, see our complete Gargoyle Gecko care guide.
The closest studied relative is the crested gecko, where individuals that engaged with novel objects sooner and for longer had lower baseline stress-hormone levels. That is a correlation, not proof that novelty causes calm, and it is still the best steer available for this genus.
What the Research Actually Says

Crested geckos. A study comparing reaction to novel objects against faecal glucocorticoid metabolite levels in two nocturnal gecko species found crested geckos had higher and more variable stress-hormone levels than leopard geckos, and that individuals interacting with novel objects sooner and longer had lower basal levels. The direction of that crested gecko correlation is genuinely unclear. Bolder geckos may be less stressed, or less stressed geckos may be bolder. A care guide that presents it as "novel objects reduce stress" is overreading it, and the honest version is more interesting anyway.
Vertical Structure, Actually Filled
Gargoyles are arboreal and spend their time on vertical surfaces. An 18x18x24 terrarium is a reasonable adult footprint, and the height only counts once there is something in it.
Cork slabs run vertically, branches at varied angles, and dense live planting that holds humidity and gives cover at every level. The test is whether the gecko can get from the floor to the top without touching glass. Our tank setup guide covers dimensions and humidity.
Cover at Every Height
An arboreal gecko needs to be able to hide up there, not only at the bottom. Broad leaves, cork tubes mounted high, and planting dense enough to disappear into mean the animal can be concealed wherever it happens to be.
Feeding, Both Halves
A prepared fruit-based diet in shallow dishes, placed at different heights so getting to food involves climbing. Other flavours and sizes are available.
Then live insects released into the planting, which is the half a dish cannot do. Feeding ranked second in the leopard gecko study, and hunting is the part that gets removed when everything arrives in a bowl. Our feeding guide covers the balance.
Novelty, Carefully Framed
Given the crested gecko correlation, occasional new cork or a rearranged branch is reasonable and cheap. Do not oversell it to yourself: visual enrichment ranked last in the leopard gecko study, and the crested gecko finding does not establish direction.
Priority Order
- Vertical structure that is genuinely climbable
- Cover available at every height
- Humidity and live planting
- Feeding presentation across both diet halves
- Feeding stations placed to require climbing
- Occasional novelty, last
What Not to Do
Do not buy height and leave it empty. Do not house gargoyles together casually, since they are known for nipping tails in shared enclosures, unlike the colonial mourning gecko. Is there enrichment research on gargoyle geckos?
No. Nothing has been published on Rhacodactylus auriculatus. The closest evidence is a study on crested geckos, the same genus group from New Caledonia, which compared reaction to novel objects against faecal glucocorticoid metabolite levels in two nocturnal gecko species.
