What the Research Actually Says

Two studies tested foraging in this exact species. Lumeij and Hommers assigned 18 pterotillomanic African greys to experimental and control groups in a crossover design across two one-month periods. The experimental group received food in pipe feeders; controls received a bowl, with two empty pipe feeders present so the cage furniture matched. Plumage was scored with Meehan's ten-point system. Separately, van Zeeland and colleagues tested how effectively different foraging enrichments increased actual foraging time in greys.

Behind both sits the foundational work. Meehan, Millam and Mench gave young Orange-winged Amazons foraging opportunity and increased physical complexity, and found both prevented and reduced psychogenic feather picking. Foraging-based enrichment was preferred over non-foraging physical enrichment such as plastic toys.

The mechanism is arithmetic. A parrot given food in a bowl finishes in minutes and has the rest of the day to fill. In the wild that time goes to searching, extracting and processing food. Feather destruction is what fills the vacuum when the searching is deleted.

Move the Food Out of the Bowl

This is the whole guide in one instruction. Deliver as much of the ration as the bird will reliably work for through extra-large wooden foraging toys and foraging boxes rather than a dish.

Start easy. A bird that has always been bowl-fed does not automatically know that food is inside a device, and the first stage is often food sitting visibly on top of a foraging toy rather than hidden in it. Rotate. A puzzle that has been solved and left up for a month is furniture.

Perches, Which Are Not Just Somewhere to Stand

A cage furnished with identical dowels loads the same points of the foot continuously and gives the bird no reason to move between locations. A set of natural branch perches in varied diameters addresses foot health and offers positional choice at the same time.

Place them at different heights and distances so moving around the cage takes actual navigation rather than one hop.

Destructible Material

For a parrot, shredding is closer to foraging than to play. Material that survives the week has failed at its job. Softwood, palm, paper and untreated natural fibre all give a grey something to dismantle, which is both an outlet and a way to deliver food inside something that has to be destroyed first.

Training, Which Is About Handling Rather Than Plucking

Worth its own section, and worth being precise about what it is evidence for.

The parrot training literature is not about feather destruction. It is about voluntary participation in husbandry and veterinary care. Laboratory macaws trained with positive reinforcement came to take part in veterinary procedures voluntarily, which the authors framed as reducing the stress of capture and restraint. In a more recent case, two scarlet macaws given ten minute sessions once a day, four to six times a week for four months learned to follow a target, enter a carrier, stay in it, step onto a scale, step onto a towel and drink from a syringe, and the behaviours transferred to handlers who had not done the training.

That is macaws rather than greys, so treat it as a borrow within the parrots. What it supports is a specific and unglamorous claim: a bird that will step onto a scale is a bird that gets weighed, and weight is usually the first thing to change when a parrot is becoming unwell.

What this is not is a second treatment for plucking alongside foraging. Foraging is still the one with direct evidence in greys.

Priority Order

  1. Food delivered through foraging devices rather than a bowl
  2. Enough daily out-of-cage time and interaction, which for this species is not optional
  3. Varied perch diameters and materials
  4. Destructible shreddable material, rotated
  5. Short daily training sessions, for cooperative care rather than for plucking
  6. Bathing opportunity
  7. Novel objects, which the Amazon study found were preferred less than foraging

What Not to Do

Do not assume plucking is behavioral before a vet has ruled out the medical causes. Do not leave the same foraging toy up indefinitely and count it as enrichment. Do not make the first foraging device difficult, since a bird that cannot solve it eats less rather than trying harder. Do not treat plastic toys as equivalent to foraging, because the Amazon study directly compared them and foraging won. And do not use cage size as a substitute for occupation, since a large cage with a food bowl in it still produces a bird with nothing to do.
