- UVB
- Not required. Corn snakes have been kept for decades without it, though it is increasingly seen as beneficial long term. If you add one, a 5.0 or 6% T5 HO bulb over the warm side, for a maximum basking UVI of 2.0 to 3.0, replaced yearly.Setup guide →
- Substrate
- Aspen shavings are the classic choice. Keep it at least 3 inches deep to allow natural burrowing behavior. Avoid pine or cedar entirely, both can damage a reptile's airways.Setup guide →
- Feeding schedule
- Hatchlings under about 3 months eat every 5 to 7 days, working down to every 14 to 21 days for a fully mature adult. Size prey at roughly 1 to 1.5 times the width of the snake's body at its widest point.Feeding guide →
- Not eating
- A healthy adult can physically survive roughly 2 to 3 months without food thanks to a slow reptile metabolism. A hatchling going without food for over about a week is already worth taking seriously and may need veterinary attention.Feeding guide →
- Handling
- Give it time to acclimate and eat successfully 3 to 4 times, roughly one to two weeks at minimum, before handling. Then 5 or 10 minute sessions a couple of times a week, building up gradually. Wait 48 to 72 hours after feeding and skip handling during a shed.Handling guide →
- Budget

- Adult size
- 3.5 to 5 feet.
- Lifespan

- Hygiene

- Power outage

A reptile-experienced vet, found through the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians before you need one. Get a new corn snake checked within the first few weeks of ownership, then an annual wellness exam with a fecal test after that.
