How Much Does a Corn Snake Really Cost?
Corn snakes are one of the most budget-friendly beginner snakes: $250-600 for a solid setup, then genuinely low costs for the two decades after.

How Much Does a Corn Snake Really Cost?
Corn snakes are one of the most budget-friendly beginner snakes out there. The animal itself is cheap, and once the setup is built, ongoing costs stay genuinely low for the length of a corn snake's life, which can stretch two decades or more. For the full care picture beyond budgeting, see our complete Corn Snake care guide.
Upfront Setup: Roughly $250 to $600, Up to $1,150 Fully Equipped
| Item | Cost Range |
|---|---|
| The snake itself (normal morph) | $25 - $70 |
| Enclosure (40 gal breeder / 4x2x2 ft PVC) | $80 - $400 |
| Heat source (UTH or overhead halogen) | $15 - $50 |
| Thermostat | $30 - $100 |
| Substrate | $10 - $30 |
| Hides (at least two) | $10 - $40 |
| Water bowl and decor | $30 - $70 |
| Digital thermometer and hygrometer | $10 - $40 |
| Optional UVB setup | $50 - $150 |
| Initial vet exam | $50 - $160 |
Corn snakes are terrestrial, so floor space matters more than height. The adult minimum is a 40-gallon breeder (36x18x18 inches), running $80 to $250 in glass, or $200 to $400 for a front-opening PVC enclosure. A hatchling can start in a 10 to 20 gallon tank and move up later.
The thermostat genuinely is not optional. A heat mat running without one can reach around 120°F and cause a serious burn, covered in more detail in our Corn Snake tank setup guide.
Most keepers land somewhere in the $250 to $600 range for a solid basic setup, with fuller builds (PVC enclosure, UVB, premium fixtures) reaching $1,150.
Ongoing Costs: Fairly Low
| Item | Annual Cost |
|---|---|
| Frozen mice or rats | $120 - $240 |
| Substrate | $30 - $80 |
| Electricity (heat runs continuously) | $60 - $180 |
| Annual vet wellness exam | $50 - $150 |
Most owners land around $200 to $500 a year once the initial setup is finished.
Corn snakes get their name from the pattern on their belly scales, which resembles Indian corn kernels, not from being found in corn fields. They actually are commonly found around corn fields and grain stores in the wild, drawn there by the rodents the grain attracts, so the name works out true either way.
The Long Game
Corn snakes typically live 15 to 20 years in captivity, with the oldest verified individual reaching 32. Over a decade, total cost (setup plus all ongoing expenses) commonly lands somewhere between $800 and $2,000, which makes them one of the more affordable long-term reptile pets relative to how long they actually live. The setup cost is the real budgeting decision, everything after that is manageable.
