Fire Skink Enrichment: The Study Where Skinks Stopped Hiding

Blue-tongue skinks given live mealworms spent more time feeding, gained more weight, and spent less time hiding. Fire skinks are semi-fossorial and hiding is normal for them, so this is not a reason to worry about a buried skink. It is a reason to notice that hiding and having nothing to do can look identical from outside the glass.
What the Research Actually Says

Nine animals were kept individually with a brick for basking and a pipe for hiding. Adding live mealworms increased time spent feeding, increased liveweight gain, and reduced time spent hiding.
Different genus, very different animal, and it is still the closest thing to a controlled skink enrichment experiment that exists. The two share the thing that matters here: a ground-dwelling lizard whose main visible behaviour is the choice between being out and being under something.
Fire skinks get called expensive substrate by keepers who bought one and then never saw it again. The joke is fair and it is also a description of an enclosure where nothing has been made worth coming out for.
Substrate, Deep and Slightly Moist
The highest-value item and the one people skimp on because it makes the enclosure harder to inspect. Fire skinks are semi-fossorial forest floor animals that spend most of their time under things.
A deep bed of coconut fibre substrate holds a tunnel shape when slightly damp and lets a skink genuinely disappear rather than scratch at a floor. Other sizes and volumes are available, and a decent-sized enclosure takes more than one pack.

Leaf Litter and Ground Cover
The layer above the substrate, and it is what turns a bare surface into forest floor. Leaf litter, cork flats laid down rather than propped up, and low planting give a skink cover it can move through rather than only hide in.
Cork tubes and flats at both ends of the thermal gradient mean the animal never has to choose between being at the right temperature and feeling secure, which is the same principle every guide in this series keeps landing on.
Live Prey, Which Is the Tested Item
The one thing the borrowed study directly supports. Release live insects into the leaf litter rather than dropping them in a dish, so finding them is the activity.
Feeding tongs are useful for the other half, offering an item directly and making the skink come and take it, which is how some keepers get a reclusive animal used to appearing at feeding time. Vary when and where prey turns up.
Thermal Choice Under Cover
Warm end, cool end, and cover at both. A gradient a skink can only use by sitting exposed is a gradient it will mostly refuse to use.
Put hides, litter depth and structure across the full range, so temperature and security are independent choices.
Digging Room, Horizontally
Floor area matters more than height for this species. A long enclosure with deep substrate gives a burrowing animal somewhere to make more than one tunnel, and more than one place to be.
Height is close to wasted here. Spend it on footprint instead.

- Leaf litter and low ground cover across the whole floor
- A thermal gradient with cover at both ends
- Live prey released into the litter
- Varying when and where food appears
- Rearranging the layout, occasionally and gently
What Not to Do
Do not give shallow substrate to a semi-fossorial animal, which is the most common version of getting this species wrong. Do not read permanent invisibility as contentment without checking what feeding looks like. Is there enrichment research on fire skinks?
No. Nothing has been published on Lepidothyris fernandi. The nearest evidence is a study on eastern blue-tongue lizards, another skink, where live mealworms increased time spent feeding, increased liveweight gain, and reduced time spent hiding.
Why does the hiding result matter for this species?
Because fire skinks are notorious for never being seen. The usual explanation is that they are shy, and the blue-tongue result suggests another reading: less hiding travelled together with more feeding, which looks like an animal that found something worth coming out for rather than one that stopped being nervous.
So is a hiding fire skink a problem?
Not by itself. They are semi-fossorial forest floor animals and burrowing is normal behaviour, not a symptom. The point is that permanent invisibility is worth investigating rather than accepting, and the cheapest thing to investigate is what feeding looks like.

Yes. They come from West African forest floor habitat and need moist substrate with good ventilation, which is a different target from either a desert species or a rainforest arboreal one. Damp underneath, not wet throughout.
Can fire skinks be housed together?
Cautiously, and not by default. Males will fight, and a subordinate animal in a shared enclosure loses access to the best hiding and feeding spots without any obvious confrontation for you to see. Solo housing is the simplest safe answer.
