An English bulldog carries a restricted airway on a heavy, compact body with commonly abnormal hips. That combination generates more heat for the same effort and loads joints that were already compromised, so the plan is mental work first, short cool flat walks second, and weight control running through both.
What the Research Actually Says
No enrichment study on the breed. The general dog evidence, covered in full in our dog enrichment guide, is what applies.
Duranton and Horowitz found that dogs given nosework approached an ambiguous bowl significantly faster afterwards on a cognitive bias test, the standard optimism measure, while a heelwork control group did not change. The mechanism they propose is expressing a natural behaviour autonomously.
Sniffing is mentally expensive and physically cheap. For a dog whose limiting factor is breathing, that is the useful combination, and it is the same argument our French Bulldog enrichment guide makes.
The breed constraints come from the veterinary literature on brachycephalic airway disease and on conformation-related health, covered in our BOAS guide and our guide to conformation breeding laws.
Hip dysplasia rates in this breed are among the highest recorded in any dog, to the point that a bulldog with normal hips is the exception rather than the rule. That is worth knowing before planning any activity built on running or jumping.
Scent Work and Puzzles First
The core, for the same reason as in the French bulldog. A snuffle mat, hidden food, a find-it cue, and puzzle feeders deliver real mental work at no respiratory cost.
A lick mat covers the calm wind-down. All of it from the daily ration rather than on top of it.
Keep it at floor level. Games that involve reaching up, jumping or twisting are asking a lot of this frame.
Walks, Short and Cool and Flat
Several short walks rather than one long one, in the cool parts of the day, on flat ground.
A harness rather than a collar. Stop on the breathing, not the clock: noisy, laboured or distressed effort ends the walk. Learn your dog's normal sound so you can hear the change.

Heat, With Even Less Margin
A larger body generates more heat for the same work and sheds it through the same compromised airway. Heat emergencies happen at temperatures other dogs find unremarkable.
Cool floors, shade, water, air conditioning where you have it, and activity moved indoors on warm days. Never a car, never a conservatory. Be conservative rather than clever.
Weight, Which Is the Main Lever
The single most useful thing an owner controls. Excess weight loads the joints and forces a restricted airway to work harder, so it makes both defining problems worse simultaneously.

Not the Water
Worth stating because it is the obvious low-impact suggestion and it is wrong here. Most bulldogs are poor swimmers, and the body shape means they sink rather than float. Garden pool drownings in this breed are not rare.
If there is water in your garden, fence it.
Skin Folds and Daily Handling
Folds need regular cleaning and drying, and it is worth building into the daily routine.
Handling sessions can double as enrichment: cooperative care training, teaching the dog to present a foot or hold still for fold cleaning, gives mental work and makes the maintenance easier for both of you.
Take the Breathing Seriously
Noisy breathing at rest is obstruction, not personality. Assessment and, where appropriate, surgery meaningfully changes what a dog can do.

Priority Order
- Scent work and puzzle feeding as the main activity
- Weight control, since it worsens both core problems
- Short, frequent, cool, flat walks in a harness, stopped on breathing
- Strict heat management
- Floor-level games that avoid jumping and twisting
- Cooperative care training folded into fold and skin maintenance
- Veterinary airway assessment rather than accepting the noise
What Not to Do
Do not exercise a bulldog like a similarly sized dog of another breed. Do not walk in the heat. Do not leave one unsupervised near water. Do not use a collar for lead pressure. Do not build games on jumping or stairs. Do not let the weight creep. And do not treat laboured breathing at rest as the breed being the breed.

Can bulldogs swim?
Most cannot swim safely. The body shape and the head make them poor swimmers, and bulldogs drown in garden pools with some regularity. Water is not the low-impact exercise option here that it is for other heavy breeds.
What about the skin folds?
They need regular cleaning and drying, and it is worth folding into the daily routine alongside everything else. Fold dermatitis is common, uncomfortable, and entirely a management problem.
