10 Surprising Axolotl Facts

Axolotls look like smiling cartoon characters with their feathery gills and permanent grin, but they are actually some of the most biologically impressive animals alive. Here are ten facts that show why they’re basically real-life superheroes in tiny bodies.

  1. They can regenerate almost any body part. Axolotls can regrow limbs, tails, spinal cords, and even parts of their brain and heart without scarring. This ability makes them incredibly valuable for scientific research.

  2. They stay in their larval form for life. Most axolotls never fully metamorphose. They keep their external gills and cute “baby” face even as adults. This is called neoteny and is one of their most unique traits.

  3. Their gills are external and feathery. The fluffy structures on the sides of their heads are gills used for breathing underwater. They can also absorb oxygen through their skin when water conditions are good.

  4. They can be triggered to “grow up.” Adding a small amount of iodine to their water can cause an axolotl to metamorphose into a land form with lungs and no external gills. It rarely happens naturally.

  5. Their smile is permanent. That wide, friendly grin isn’t an expression of happiness. It’s simply the natural shape of their mouth. They always look cheerful even when they’re just floating around.

  6. They are used heavily in medical research. Because of their incredible regeneration abilities, axolotls are studied worldwide to understand healing, organ regrowth, and genetic processes that could one day help humans.

  7. They eat by suction. Axolotls don’t chew their food. They open their mouths and suck prey in like a vacuum. Worms and small insects disappear in one quick gulp.

  8. They can regrow their spinal cord. If damaged, an axolotl’s spinal cord can repair and reconnect itself. This is another reason they are so important for studying nervous system recovery.

  9. Wild axolotls live in a very small area. They are native only to a few lakes near Mexico City, mainly Lake Xochimilco. Pollution and habitat loss have made them critically endangered in the wild.

  10. They come in many colors in captivity. While wild axolotls are usually dark, captive ones can be white, pink, golden, or even glow under certain lights. The leucistic variety with pink gills is especially popular.
