Failed Molts and the "White Ring of Death"
Molting is constant for this species, an adult sheds roughly every 3 to 4 weeks according to Shrimp Science, with younger shrimp molting even more often as they grow. Most molts are routine and unremarkable. When one fails, it's usually visible as the so-called "white ring of death," a complete white band appearing around the middle of the shrimp's body instead of a clean split at the head, leaving the shrimp unable to fully separate from its old shell.
Tropical Treasures Wyo links this most often to a rapid swing in general hardness (GH), an oversized or sudden water change, a calcium- and protein-poor diet, or water that's simply too cold to support a normal molt cycle. It's usually fatal once it happens, which makes the prevention side, stable GH, gradual water changes, and a properly fed colony, the real point of leverage. A shrimp that hides and stays still for a few days right after a normal molt is not showing signs of a problem, that's just the vulnerable window while a fresh shell hardens, according to Shrimp Science. It's worth genuine concern only if that lasts well beyond a few days, or if a shrimp's body has visibly separated from its shell.
Copper Toxicity, the One to Take Most Seriously
Shrimp and other invertebrates tolerate almost no copper at all, at concentrations that wouldn't register as a concern for most fish. A peer-reviewed 2014 toxicity study in Biological Research tested copper against four other metals on a related freshwater shrimp species, Macrobrachium nipponense, and found a 96-hour lethal concentration (LC50) of just 0.0313 mg/L, by far the most toxic of the five metals tested, with the researchers proposing a biologically safe target closer to 0.003 mg/L.
The practical risk is that copper shows up in places keepers don't expect: many common fish medications, some plant fertilizers, and pesticide treatments used on store-bought aquarium plants before sale. Buce Plant specifically warns that new aquarium plants are often treated with a snail-killing pesticide that also contains copper, and recommends quarantining new plants in clean water for at least five days, with daily water changes, before they go anywhere near a shrimp tank. Never treat a shared shrimp-and-fish tank with a copper-based medication either, treat fish separately instead. If you keep any copper-based medication in the house for other tanks, store it well away from anything that could accidentally end up in a shrimp tank.
"Unexplained" Colony Die-Offs
Sudden shrimp losses that don't seem to have an obvious cause are common enough in the hobby that they can feel like their own mysterious phenomenon. In practice, they almost always trace back to one of the causes already covered here: an uncycled or recently disturbed tank, a parameter swing during a water change, a failed molt, or trace copper contamination. Shrimp Science recommends limiting water changes to roughly 10% a week, or 20% every two weeks, specifically because larger or more frequent changes shock shrimp even when the new water itself is clean and dechlorinated. The copper study above wasn't testing cherry shrimp specifically, Macrobrachium nipponense is a different, more distantly related freshwater shrimp, but the result lines up with what shrimp keepers see across species: invertebrates are dramatically more copper-sensitive than fish. The researchers ranked all five metals they tested from most to least toxic as copper, cadmium, antimony, gallium, and indium, with copper's 96-hour lethal concentration measured at roughly one-tenth the level of the next most toxic metal. That's a useful number to keep in mind the next time a fish medication label says "safe for the tank," since "the tank" rarely means the shrimp in it.
The Pattern Worth Remembering
Nearly everything on this list traces back to water stability and mineral content, exactly what a mature, properly cycled tank with gradual water changes prevents. A gentle sponge filter and a water conditioner used on every water change do more preventive work here than any treatment does after the fact.
