Emperor Scorpion

Pandinus imperator

InvertebratesBeginner care

🌍 Overview

The emperor scorpion is one of the largest scorpion species in the world and the most widely kept scorpion as a pet. Native to the tropical rainforest and savanna of West Africa, they are surprisingly mild-mannered compared to many smaller species. Under UV light their exoskeleton fluoresces a vivid blue-green — a phenomenon related to compounds in the cuticle whose precise function is still debated. Their venom is relatively weak for their size.

🤓 Did You Know?

Scorpions fluoresce a brilliant blue-green color under ultraviolet (UV/black) light. Scientists are not entirely sure why, but the chemical responsible is in the hyaline layer of their exoskeleton. Scorpions do this under natural UV from moonlight too.
