Hedgehog Feeding: Schedule, Diet, and Why They Stop Eating

Hedgehogs are known for hiding illness, which is exactly why a full day without eating deserves faster attention here than it might for a more expressive pet.

Feeding Schedule

Fed once daily, in the evening, hedgehogs are nocturnal and every source agrees this timing matches their natural activity. Water stays available around the clock via bottle or bowl, checked daily.

Published daily amounts run from 3 to 4 teaspoons of hedgehog pellets a day up to 1 to 3 tablespoons, roughly a 2 to 3 times spread, so a flat total is the wrong tool. Feed roughly 2 to 3 teaspoons of a protein base plus 1 to 2 teaspoons of chopped produce, adjusted by body condition rather than a flat number. Portions generally shrink a bit with age and activity level, which lines up with the body-condition approach either way.

Insects are a supplement, not the daily centerpiece: 5 to 6 mealworms or 1 to 2 crickets, 2 to 3 times a week and up to 3 to 4 times weekly. Hoglets start sampling solid food around 3 weeks old and are weaned by 4 to 6 weeks. For a newly homed young hedgehog, 2 consecutive nights of not eating is the point breeders recommend calling for help.

What Hedgehogs Eat

The base diet is a high-quality hedgehog-specific kibble, or a high-quality, low-fat cat food used as a base, moderate to high protein (roughly 30 to 50% dry matter) and moderate fat (10 to 20% dry matter), consistent with an insectivore rather than a full carnivore.

Add gut-loaded mealworms, crickets, earthworms, and dubia roaches as protein supplements, gut-loaded meaning the insects were fed a nutritious diet for a day or two before being offered. Waxworms are edible but too fatty to be a staple, treat-only. Hard-boiled egg and, for some owners, occasional pinkie mice, are optional extra animal protein.

Add small amounts of chopped, cooked vegetables and fruit, about 1 to 2 teaspoons daily to every other day: peas, cooked carrot, apple, banana, and pear. Cook or soften vegetables rather than serving them raw and hard, that's a real choking hazard for this species.

Safe Treats and Foods to Avoid

Safe, in moderation: gut-loaded mealworms, crickets, earthworms, and dubia roaches, cooked carrot, apple, pear, banana, hard-boiled egg, and freeze-dried chicken liver as an enticement for shy eaters. Waxworms are fine only as a rare treat, too high in fat for regular use.

Genuinely toxic or unsafe: avocado, raw meat and raw eggs, and milk or dairy, which causes real digestive upset. Nuts, seeds, and hard raw vegetables like uncooked carrot are choking hazards. Lettuce and celery aren't toxic but are nutritionally near-empty filler that shouldn't substitute for real food.

Why Hedgehogs Stop Eating

1. New-home stress. Reduced or zero intake for the first few days after coming home is normal, stress from the move suppresses appetite and can cause temporary loose stool. Check fecal output, not bowl level, to confirm a shy new hedgehog is actually eating.
2. Quilling. Spine replacement episodes, most intense at 4 to 6 weeks old and again around 4 months, are uncomfortable and cause grumpiness and reduced activity. Appetite loss isn't described as a routine part of quilling itself though, refusing food for more than 24 hours during this period is treated as a real warning sign, not an expected symptom.
3. Cold stress. African pygmy hedgehogs can't safely hibernate the way wild European hedgehogs do. A room that drops below about 72°F can trigger a hypothermic torpor state that suppresses appetite and can become fatal within hours without gradual rewarming.
4. Dental disease. Loose teeth, periodontal disease, or something lodged in the mouth commonly cause reduced eating, often with drooling, bad breath, or chewing on one side.
5. Tumors. Cancer is unusually common in captive hedgehogs, studies report tumor rates anywhere from roughly 29% to over 50% across different populations, typically in middle-aged animals. Oral tumors specifically can make eating physically painful.
6. General illness. GI upset, parasites, respiratory infection, or organ disease all suppress appetite, usually with other symptoms like diarrhea or breathing changes.
7. Water access issues. Some hedgehogs are picky about bottle versus bowl, or reject unfamiliar-tasting tap water. A clogged sipper bottle can also secondarily reduce food interest, a fixable husbandry issue.

When to Worry

Multiple sources converge on roughly 24 hours as the outer limit before a vet visit is warranted, see a vet immediately if a hedgehog hasn't eaten or had water in a full day. For a newly acquired hedgehog still adjusting, breeders treat the threshold a bit more loosely, around 2 nights, since some initial stress-related refusal is expected.

Watch for signs that turn a skipped meal into an urgent case: lethargy or weakness, wobbling or loss of balance, open-mouth or labored breathing, a body that feels cold, possible torpor, drooling, bad breath, chewing only on one side or dropping food, and ongoing weight loss. Hedgehogs genuinely hide illness until they're quite sick, which is the reason vets favor early evaluation once that 24-hour mark passes rather than a wait-and-see approach.
