🏠 Housing & Setup
Labs are highly adaptable and thrive in homes with yards, but can do well in larger apartments given substantial daily exercise, typically an hour or more split across the day. No veterinary or kennel club body publishes a breed-specific minute count, so treat any number you read as practical guidance rather than a standard. They are mouthy puppies who chew: manage this with appropriate chew toys and by not leaving them unsupervised near shoes, furniture or wiring.

Labs are one of the most obesity-prone breeds, and part of that is genetic. A 14 base pair deletion in the POMC gene runs at a 12 percent allele frequency, with about 22 percent of Labradors carrying at least one copy, and each copy adds a mean 1.90 kg of body weight and about half a body condition point along with greater food motivation. That is an effect measured feeding and daily exercise can absorb, not a sentence, and most overweight Labs are overweight for ordinary reasons. Measure food rather than eyeballing it, keep treats to about 10 percent of daily calories, and aim for a lean body condition where the ribs are easily felt but not seen. It matters: Labradors carry 2.83 times the odds of osteoarthritis and 1.62 times the odds of obesity compared with other dogs, and musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of death in the breed at 24.5 percent.
🎮 Enrichment & Handling
Bred to retrieve all day in the field, Labs need sustained aerobic exercise: swimming, fetch, running, or hiking. They also need training and mental challenges. Without adequate exercise and stimulation, Labs become destructive chewers and boisterous inside the home. They are among the easiest dogs to train due to their food drive and eagerness to please.

The joint story is more reassuring than the breed's reputation suggests: OFA data across 324,780 hip evaluations shows 87.5 percent normal and 11.3 percent dysplastic, against an all-breed average of 84.3 percent normal, and Labradors have the highest excellent hip rate of any high-volume breed at 21.7 percent. Elbows run 90.0 percent normal. Still screen, but the Labrador is one of the milder large breeds here. Exercise-induced collapse is a genetic condition caused by a DNM1 variant, producing weakness or collapse after intense exercise: of 9,505 Labradors tested, 87.2 percent were clear, 12.1 percent carriers and 0.7 percent affected, which puts the breed 3rd of all breeds. Progressive retinal atrophy and centronuclear myopathy are both rarer than usually implied, at 0.1 percent and 0.0 percent affected in tested stock respectively, though the CNM founder mutation was spread worldwide by popular sires and carrier rates outside tested populations are higher. The condition the breed pages usually miss is laryngeal paralysis: Cornell names the Labrador as the breed most commonly affected, and it is usually the first sign of a wider nerve and muscle disorder called geriatric onset laryngeal paralysis and polyneuropathy. Day to day, the most commonly recorded disorders in UK Labradors are ear infection at 10.4 percent, being overweight or obese at 8.8 percent, degenerative joint disease at 5.5 percent, lameness at 4.4 percent and periodontal disease at 4.2 percent.

Chocolate Labradors also had nearly twice the rate of ear infections, 23.4 percent against 12.8 percent, and about four times the rate of hot spots, 4.0 percent against 1.1 percent. The likely explanation is that chocolate is recessive, so breeders chasing the color work from a smaller gene pool and select for coat over health. If you own a chocolate Lab, check the ears weekly rather than monthly.
What is exercise-induced collapse?
EIC is a genetic condition caused by a DNM1 variant that causes weakness or collapse after intense exercise. Of 9,505 Labradors tested, 87.2 percent were clear, 12.1 percent were carriers and 0.7 percent were affected, which ranks the breed 3rd of all breeds. It is worth knowing before you push a young Lab hard, and it is a DNA test you should ask a breeder for by name. Progressive retinal atrophy and centronuclear myopathy are the other two breed-specific DNA tests, though both are now rare in tested stock.
My breeder says the parents have prelim hips. Is that the same as an OFA certification?
No. OFA only issues a final hip or elbow certification for dogs radiographed at 24 months of age or older, when the skeleton has matured and the joint conformation is settled. Preliminary evaluations can be done earlier and are useful to a breeder planning a litter, but they are not a certification and they can change. Ask for the OFA number and look it up yourself in the public database rather than accepting a screenshot. For a Labrador you also want an eye exam and the DNM1 exercise-induced collapse result.
