Domestic Shorthair: Breed Quirks

Domestic shorthairs are highly adaptable to apartment and house living. They are generally robust, low-maintenance, and come in an enormous variety of personalities. Provide standard indoor enrichment: cat trees, perches, toys, and a clean litter box routine.

Feed a complete, balanced wet and dry food combination. No breed-specific dietary needs, but all cats benefit from wet food as a primary diet source for hydration. Monitor weight, as DSH cats can be prone to indoor-cat obesity.

Personality varies enormously between individuals, and early socialization does much of the work, but it is not true that breed contributes nothing. A study of 5,726 cats across 40 breeds found behavior differences in 19 breeds and breed groups across ten traits, with heritability estimates from 0.40 to 0.53, and house cats came out as a distinct behavioral group of their own. So tailor enrichment to the cat in front of you, because the spread within any group is wide, but do not expect a blank slate. Daily interactive play benefits all of them.

A mixed background is a real statistical advantage rather than immunity. Random-bred cats carry higher genetic diversity than pedigrees on both common measures, with microsatellite heterozygosity of 0.65 against 0.51 for purebreds and genome-wide heterozygosity of 38.8 percent against 34.0 percent, and UK life tables give crossbred cats 11.89 years at birth against 11.74 for all cats. But they are not the longest-lived group: Burmese reach 14.42 years and Birman 14.39. Nor are they free of inherited disease. In a screen of 11,036 cats, 22.5 percent carried at least one disease-associated variant and 4.1 percent were genetically at risk of an actual condition, and three variants (hyperoxaluria type II, lipoprotein lipase deficiency and myotonia congenita) turned up only in non-pedigreed cats. What actually fills the clinic is acquired: in a random sample of 18,249 UK cats, gum disease ran at 15.23 percent, obesity 11.58 percent, general dental disease 9.23 percent, overgrown nails 5.23 percent, flea infestation 5.07 percent and heart murmur 4.44 percent. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart's main pumping chamber wall, is emphatically not a pedigree-only problem: it runs at roughly 15 percent of the general cat population and up to 29 percent in older cats, and it is usually silent until a clot lodges in the hind limbs. Feline MDR1 medication sensitivity, which changes safe dosing of several common drugs, appeared in 1.1 percent of that 11,036-cat screen and is still not widely known among vets. Annual wellness exams with the chest listened to, plus weight monitoring, remain the two highest-value preventive measures.
