Bengal: Breed Quirks
Cat
The wild-looking, highly athletic cat that needs an active owner.

🤓 Did you know? The Bengal's most common inherited disease did not come from the wild side of the family tree. Pyruvate kinase deficiency, a recessive hemolytic anemia, sits at a 13 percent allele frequency in unbiased Bengal samples and 17.24 percent among 2,230 Bengals tested across the US and UK, a rate beaten only by the Singapura at 41.4 percent. It entered the breed through the domestic Abyssinian outcrosses used to turn Asian leopard cat hybrids into house cats. The leopard look is the safe part.

🏠 Housing & Setup
Bengals are high-energy, athletic cats that need significantly more space and activity than typical domestic cats. They climb, leap, and run constantly, so catios, leash walking and large multi-level cat furniture all earn their keep. The CFA confirms the water fascination that owners talk about, noting they may enjoy watching you brush your teeth or try to join you in the shower, and that they are quite trainable and often learn tricks. The door-opening and faucet-turning stories are widespread but unsourced, so treat them as folklore worth Bengal-proofing against rather than as documented breed behavior.
🥗 Diet & Feeding
Bengals often do well on a high-protein, grain-free diet that aligns with their semi-wild ancestry. Many Bengal owners feed raw or high-meat wet food as the primary diet. As with all cats, AAFCO compliance and nutritional completeness are essential. Wet food is important for urinary health.
🎮 Enrichment & Handling
Bengals are among the most active cat breeds studied, ranked alongside the Cornish Rex and Korat in a survey of 5,726 cats across 40 breeds. Budget 30 to 60 minutes of vigorous interactive play daily, plus access to safe outdoor exploration through a catio or leash, though that duration is a practical recommendation rather than a researched figure. Without adequate stimulation they become destructive and loud. They are highly trainable and enjoy leash walking, fetch and puzzle feeding. One common piece of advice worth pushing back on: a second active cat is not an automatic fix. The same study that ranked Bengals among the most active also ranked them high in aggression, and behavior traits in it were substantially heritable at 0.40 to 0.53, so a Bengal's intensity is temperament rather than boredom you can outsource to another cat. Judge the individual before adding a second.
💊 Health & Common Issues
Two inherited diseases matter most, and breeders routinely test for only one. PRA-b is the Bengal-specific progressive retinal atrophy, a recessive early-onset retinal degeneration with ophthalmoscopic signs at 9 weeks and behaviorally obvious vision loss by 1 year. It is caused by a variant in the KIF3B gene, and researchers specifically excluded the common feline rdAc mutation in CEP290 as the cause in Bengals. Be precise about what that means. Because Bengals carry Abyssinian ancestry, rdAc can genuinely segregate in some Bengal lines, so it is a real test for a real disease. The error is buying rdAc and believing you have screened for Bengal PRA. You have not. The second is erythrocyte pyruvate kinase deficiency, a recessive hemolytic anemia, meaning red blood cells break down faster than the body can replace them. It causes chronic, intermittent anemia with lethargy, weakness, weight loss, jaundice and abdominal enlargement, and onset ranges from as early as six months to as late as five years, which is why it gets missed. The Bengal allele frequency is 13.0 percent in unbiased sampling and 17.24 percent among tested cats, so roughly one in four to one in three tested Bengals carries at least one copy. A DNA test exists for both. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is listed as a breed concern, but the evidence is weaker than for the Maine Coon or Ragdoll: the Bengal is among breeds believed to be at increased risk with comprehensive prevalence data lacking, and there is no Bengal-specific mutation and no validated DNA test, so echocardiography is the only screening tool. Tritrichomonas foetus is a protozoal parasite causing chronic large-bowel diarrhea, found in 31 percent of cats at one cat show and in 28 of 89 catteries, with onset clustering between 0 and 24 months. Diagnosis needs fecal PCR or protozoal culture, not a standard fecal float. Bengals are also one of six breeds with a statistically significant predisposition to feline infectious peritonitis, concentrated in cats under 2 years old, exactly the window when a kitten comes home from a cattery.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How much attention does a Bengal need every day?
Thirty to 60 minutes of vigorous interactive play, plus access to safe outdoor exploration through a catio or leash. That duration is a practical recommendation rather than a researched figure, but the underlying need is real: a survey of 5,726 cats across 40 breeds put Bengals among the most active breeds, alongside the Cornish Rex and Korat. Without adequate stimulation they become destructive and loud.
Are Bengals a good first cat?
Usually not. The breed is rated advanced for good reason: the activity requirement is high and non-negotiable, and they are clever enough to turn on faucets, open cabinets, and work lever-style door handles. Bengal-proofing a home is closer to toddler-proofing than to normal cat ownership.
Which DNA tests actually matter for a Bengal kitten?
Two, and one of them is routinely skipped. PRA-b is the Bengal-specific progressive retinal atrophy variant, caused by a change in the KIF3B gene, and it is not the same as the common feline rdAc mutation in CEP290, which researchers specifically excluded as the cause in Bengals. Because Bengals carry Abyssinian ancestry, rdAc can genuinely turn up in some Bengal lines, so it is not a useless test. It is simply not a test for this disease, and a breeder who ran only rdAc has not screened for Bengal blindness. The second is pyruvate kinase deficiency, present at a 13 to 17 percent allele frequency in Bengals, which causes intermittent hemolytic anemia that can first appear anywhere from six months to five years of age. Neither condition is visible in a kitten, which is the entire point of testing the parents.
What is pyruvate kinase deficiency?
It is a recessive disorder of red blood cell metabolism, meaning the cells break down faster than the body replaces them, producing a chronic and intermittent anemia. Signs are lethargy, weakness, weight loss, jaundice and abdominal enlargement, and onset ranges from as early as six months to as late as five years, which is why it is so often missed or attributed to something else. It is the most under-covered Bengal health issue and it has a cheap DNA test, so ask for the parents' results.
My cattery-bought Bengal kitten has chronic diarrhea. What is the likely cause?
Tritrichomonas foetus is high on the list. A cat show survey found 31 percent of cats positive, across 28 of 89 catteries, and onset clusters between 0 and 24 months with an average of 9 months. It causes chronic large-bowel diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus and can persist for weeks, months or years. Diagnosis needs fecal PCR or protozoal culture, not a standard fecal float. Ronidazole is the treatment of choice but has a narrow safety margin and resistance is increasingly recognized, and most cats resolve spontaneously anyway, which can take up to two years.
Should I get a second cat to keep my Bengal busy?
Not automatically. The largest study of cat breed behavior, covering 5,726 cats across 40 breeds, put Bengals among the most active breeds alongside the Cornish Rex and Korat, but the same study also found Bengals ranked high in aggression. Behavior traits in that study were substantially heritable, at 0.40 to 0.53, so a Bengal's intensity is temperament rather than boredom you can outsource. Judge the individual cat before adding a second one.
