French Bulldog
Canis lupus familiaris
🌍 Overview
The French bulldog was developed in Paris in the mid-1800s by crossing English bulldogs brought by lace workers migrating to France with local Parisian dogs. Their compact size, bat-like ears, and minimal exercise requirements made them popular urban companions. They are now the most popular dog breed in the UK — a popularity that has unfortunately driven irresponsible breeding and severe health problems related to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) skull structure.

🤩 Fun Facts
🐶 Three Eyelids
Dogs have three eyelids. A third one called a nictitating membrane helps protect and moisten the eye. You can sometimes spot it when a dog is sleepy!
🐶 Unique Nose Prints
A dog's nose print is as unique as a human fingerprint. No two are alike! Some kennel clubs have started using nose prints for identification.
🐶 Dogs Dream Too
Dogs dream just like humans do. Their REM sleep looks remarkably similar to ours. You'll notice twitching paws and little whimpers as they relive their day.
🤓 Did You Know?
French Bulldogs cannot reproduce naturally in most cases: their puppies' heads are too large to pass through the birth canal, so nearly all Frenchie litters are delivered by C-section. They also cannot swim due to their front-heavy build and must always wear a life jacket near water.
