• Dads Give BirthSeahorses are the only animals where the male gives birth! The female deposits eggs into the male's pouch, where he fertilizes and carries them until they hatch.
• No Stomach, No ProblemSeahorses have no stomach at all, so food passes through them so quickly that they must graze almost constantly, some species eating thousands of tiny shrimp a day just to survive. They're also famously bad swimmers, fluttering a tiny dorsal fin up to 35 times a second just to inch forward.
• A Placenta Made of SkinThe male seahorse does not just carry eggs, he gestates them. The pouch seals shut, the embryos become embedded in his tissue, and the heavily vascularised wall handles gas exchange and feeding like a placenta. The difference is what it is built from: a mammal's placenta grows from embryonic tissue, a seahorse's is converted skin.
• He Broke His Immune System FirstCarrying young means carrying tissue your immune system reads as foreign. Seahorses solved it by demolition rather than regulation: they lost their spleen, their MHC II pathway was lost or rearranged, and three Toll-like receptors conserved across the other vertebrates are simply gone. A vertebrate missing all that should be defenseless.
• Seawater Comes In With the EggsWhen a female transfers her eggs, non-sterile seawater goes into the pouch with them, which then seals: a warm, nutrient-rich, enclosed space inside an animal that has just dismantled much of its immunity. The fix is chemical, not cellular. Hepcidin and lysozyme run high inside the pouch, handling bacteria the missing immune hardware no longer can.
