Goldfish

Fish

The pond classic that outgrows its reputation — and its bowl — in a hurry!

🤓 Did you know? Goldfish have real, months-long memories and can be trained to push levers, navigate mazes, and recognize shapes and colors — directly contradicting the popular '3-second memory' myth. They also grow to the size of their environment: a goldfish kept in a tiny bowl doesn't stay small because it's content, it's stunted, which is a sign of poor welfare rather than a convenient feature.

🏠 Housing & Setup

A single fancy goldfish needs at least 20 gallons, with 10 additional gallons for each fish added. Common and comet goldfish grow considerably larger and are much better suited to an outdoor pond or a tank of 55 gallons or more. Goldfish are cold-water fish and generally do not need a heater — room temperature in the 65 to 72 degree F range suits them well, though they should never be mixed with tropical species that require heat. Because goldfish produce a lot of waste, strong filtration (a canister filter is ideal) is essential regardless of tank size. Bowls should never be used under any circumstances.

🥗 Diet & Feeding

Goldfish are omnivores and do best on a high-quality goldfish-specific pellet as their staple food. Blanched vegetables — shelled peas, zucchini, and leafy greens — are important for digestion and help prevent the swim bladder problems goldfish are prone to. Occasional treats of bloodworms or brine shrimp add variety. Feed small portions once or twice a day; goldfish will beg constantly but are prone to overeating, bloating, and constipation if fed too much or given only low-quality flake food.

🎮 Enrichment & Handling

Goldfish are highly food-motivated and genuinely trainable — many keepers teach them tricks like pushing a mini soccer ball, swimming through hoops, or following a finger around the glass. They enjoy foraging for pellets among smooth river rock and will happily graze on live plants as part of their natural feeding behavior (choose either plastic decor or plant varieties you don't mind them nibbling). Fancy varieties with rounded bodies are comparatively poor swimmers, so generous open swimming space matters more than clutter. Goldfish are also social and do well kept in same-species groups.

💊 Health & Common Issues

Swim bladder disorder is especially common in round-bodied fancy varieties and is often linked to diet and genetics. Ammonia and nitrite poisoning from undersized, under-filtered tanks is the single most common cause of premature goldfish death, since keepers frequently underestimate how much waste they produce. Ich and fin rot both follow poor water quality. Avoid cheap 'feeder' goldfish, which are typically bred for low cost rather than health or longevity. Weekly water testing and 20 to 30 percent water changes are essential maintenance, not optional extras.
