Narwhal Facts: The Real Unicorn of the Sea

Somewhere beneath the frozen surface of the Arctic Ocean, a creature straight out of a fairy tale glides through the dark water. It has a spiraling ivory spike jutting from its face, it can dive deeper than most submarines dare to go, and its very name translates to 'corpse whale.' Meet the narwhal: one of the most bizarre, beautiful, and misunderstood animals on the planet. Everything you thought you knew about unicorns starts here.

That 'Horn' Is Actually a Tooth

Let's clear something up right away: narwhals do not have horns. What looks like a magical unicorn spike is actually a tooth. Specifically, it is a modified left upper canine tooth that grows straight through the upper lip and keeps spiraling outward, sometimes reaching up to 10 feet (3 meters) in length. That is longer than most people are tall.

In almost all cases, it is the males who grow the tusk. Tusked females are genuinely rare: direct sampling of 173 narwhals put them at about 1.5 percent of females, and when one does grow a tusk it tends to be shorter and less pronounced. Occasionally, a male narwhal will grow two tusks, though this is quite rare. Virtually every narwhal tusk spirals in the same direction: counterclockwise, when viewed from the tip.

For centuries, scientists debated what the tusk was actually for. Early thinking dismissed it as too delicate for serious combat, and many narwhals seemed to survive just fine without one. The answer, when it finally came, was far more interesting than anyone expected.

What the Tusk Actually Does

The narwhal tusk is threaded with as many as 10 million dentinal tubules, microscopic channels about two micrometres across, running from the pulp out to openings on the surface. That figure gets repeated as "10 million nerve endings," which is not the same thing and is worth untangling. The nerves sit in the pulp at the center. The tubules carry seawater inward, and the movement of fluid in them is what the nerves actually read, the same hydrodynamic principle that makes a cracked human tooth ache in cold air.

What the tusk can sense is also narrower than usually claimed. Only salinity has been demonstrated in a living animal: narwhals showed significant heart-rate changes when high-salt and fresh water were washed over the tusk surface. Temperature and pressure detection are plausible given the same anatomy, but they remain hypotheses rather than findings.

Narwhals have been filmed using their tusks to stun Arctic char, striking hard enough to incapacitate the fish before eating them. Drone footage from Creswell Bay in August 2022 is the only peer-reviewed record of it, so this is a newly documented behavior rather than a long-established one. They also use their tusks in social sparring matches with other males, a behavior called 'tusking,' where two narwhals cross their tusks above the water's surface. This is less about fighting and more about establishing social rank, similar to how deer lock antlers.

Fun Fact

The narwhal tusk has no enamel coating, which is what leaves those tubules open to the sea and makes the whole thing sensory. The flexibility is a separate property and comes from the dentine itself, which is considerably softer and less mineralized than human or cattle dentine, closer in its mechanics to reindeer antler. An eight-foot tusk is reckoned to yield at least a foot in any direction without breaking. That is one seriously tough tooth.

Life Under the Arctic Ice

Narwhals are built for one of the harshest environments on Earth. They live in the Arctic waters of Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia, spending much of their lives among dense sea ice. Rather than avoiding the ice, narwhals actively seek it out, choosing wintering grounds over deep water in dense pack ice and navigating narrow leads and cracks to feed. The ice is not, however, where they hide from orcas. When killer whales came within about 100 km, tracked narwhals were almost entirely confined to a narrow band of water directly against the shore. Threatened, they run for the shallows, not the floes.

When it comes to diving, narwhals are in a league of their own. Their everyday dive is more modest than the headline: a weighted winter mean of about 207 meters. It is the ceiling that impresses. Daily maximum dives in January averaged over 1,000 meters, and the deepest recorded in a primary source is 1,600 meters, close to a mile down. That is the extreme rather than the routine. At those depths, the pressure is crushing, the water is pitch black, and the temperature hovers just above freezing. In winter, narwhals make dives past 800 meters up to 25 times a day, hunting for Arctic cod, Greenland halibut, and squid on the seafloor.

Each year, narwhals follow a seasonal migration pattern. In summer, they move into shallower coastal fjords and bays where the ice retreats. As winter approaches and the sea ice returns, they head back out to deeper offshore waters where they spend the cold months diving beneath the ice pack. These migrations can cover hundreds of miles and are remarkably consistent from year to year.

One of the narwhal's most distinctive physical features is something it lacks: a dorsal fin. Most whales and dolphins have one, but narwhals do not. Instead, they have a low dorsal ridge. This is thought to be an adaptation for life under sea ice, allowing them to swim close to the underside of the ice without getting snagged.

How Narwhals Talk to Each Other

Narwhals are highly social animals that travel in groups called pods, typically ranging from a few individuals to dozens. To stay connected in the dark, icy waters of the Arctic, they rely on a rich repertoire of sounds. Narwhals produce clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls, using these sounds both for echolocation (finding their way and locating prey) and for communication with other narwhals.

Their click trains are particularly impressive. Narwhals can produce rapid sequences of clicks that bounce off objects and return as echoes, giving them a detailed acoustic picture of their surroundings. This is the same basic principle as sonar, and it allows narwhals to hunt effectively even in total darkness at the bottom of the ocean.

Researchers have noted that narwhal vocalizations are complex and varied, suggesting that different sounds carry different meanings. While we have not yet decoded their 'language,' the diversity of their calls points to a level of social sophistication that scientists are only beginning to understand.

The Whale Named After a Corpse

The usual derivation has 'narwhal' coming from the Old Norse náhvalr, from nár ('corpse') and hvalr ('whale'). So: corpse whale. Not exactly flattering, but there is a reason for it. Narwhals have a mottled, blotchy grey-and-white skin pattern that the Norse seafarers are said to have thought resembled the bloated, discolored skin of a drowned sailor.

It is a great story and it may be a folk etymology. The Germanic linguist Winfred Lehmann argued that náhvalr was a West Norse term for a whale distinguished by a long, narrow projection, which would mean the animal was named for the obvious thing, the tusk, and the corpses got attached later by people who liked the sound of it.

Young narwhals are actually born a uniform dark gray or brownish color. As they age, their skin lightens and develops the distinctive mottled pattern. Very old narwhals can appear almost entirely white, which adds another layer of eerie beauty to these already otherworldly animals.

The Unicorn Legend and the Medieval Tusk Trade

For hundreds of years, Europeans had no idea narwhals existed. What they did have were these extraordinary spiraling ivory horns that occasionally turned up in the hands of traders from the far north. These were sold as 'alicorn,' the horn of a unicorn, and they were among the most valuable objects in the medieval world.

At their peak, narwhal tusks were worth ten times their weight in gold. Kings and queens paid fortunes for them. Queen Elizabeth I is the standard example, though the accounts disagree about what actually happened: one has her paying 10,000 pounds for a unicorn horn, the price of a castle, and another has Martin Frobisher presenting her with a tusk in 1577 which she ordered kept with the crown jewels. Both are traditional accounts rather than documented transactions. The tusks were believed to have magical properties: they could supposedly detect poison in food and drink, cure illness, and protect the owner from harm. Cups and goblets were carved from them for royalty who feared being poisoned.

The Inuit peoples of the Arctic, who had lived alongside narwhals for thousands of years, knew exactly what these tusks were. Denmark-Norway, meanwhile, controlled the supply, holding narwhal ivory as a territorial speciality through its dominion over Iceland and the Faroes. Whether the origin was actively concealed or simply never volunteered is the sort of thing the popular retellings assert and the historical record does not settle. It was not until the 1600s that European naturalists began to connect the 'alicorn' to an actual animal, and the unicorn market slowly collapsed.

Fun Fact

The Throne Chair of Denmark, made in the 1600s, was constructed almost entirely from narwhal tusks, passed off as unicorn horn. The protection-from-poison story attached to it is the general alicorn belief transplanted onto a specific object; what the sources actually describe is a coronation seat, where the soon-to-be king gripped the ivory arms and only then received his divinely ordained authority. It still exists today and is on display at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen.

Surprising Facts You Probably Did Not Know

Narwhals are full of surprises. Here are some of the most jaw-dropping facts about these Arctic oddballs:

  • They are closely related to beluga whales. Narwhals and belugas are the only two living members of the family Monodontidae. They are the sole survivors of an ancient lineage. At least one hybrid has been confirmed: a single skull recovered in West Greenland in 1990, DNA-verified as a narluga by Skovrind et al. in 2019.
  • They are long-lived, and the famous number is one animal. Scientists estimate narwhal age through aspartic acid racemization of the eye lens. Of 75 narwhals sampled in West Greenland, the oldest came out at 115 years, plus or minus 10, a single female at the far end of the distribution rather than a typical lifespan. NOAA's species page puts the working figure at 25 to 50 years, and later work found a whale aged 70 by growth-layer counting came out at 55 by radiocarbon, so the uncertainty on old animals is real.
  • They are surprisingly hard to study. Narwhals live in some of the most remote and inaccessible places on Earth. They are notoriously skittish around boats and equipment, which means much of what we know about them has only been discovered in the last few decades thanks to satellite tagging and underwater cameras.
  • Climate change is a serious threat. Narwhals are considered one of the most vulnerable Arctic mammals to climate change. They are highly specialized for sea ice environments, and as the ice retreats, their habitat shrinks and new predators like orcas gain access to waters that were previously frozen year-round.

The Real Unicorn Deserves Our Attention

The narwhal is proof that reality can be stranger and more wonderful than any myth. A whale with a 10-foot tooth growing out of its face, diving nearly a mile beneath the Arctic ice, communicating in clicks and whistles, and inspiring centuries of unicorn legends. It does not get more extraordinary than that.

The ocean keeps producing animals that sound invented. Male seahorses genuinely get pregnant, growing a working placenta out of modified skin, and they had to dismantle part of their own immune system to do it.

Yet narwhals remain one of the least understood large mammals on the planet. Their remote habitat and shy nature have kept them mysterious even as science has advanced. Every new study reveals something unexpected, and there is almost certainly more to learn about what that remarkable tusk can do, how complex their social lives really are, and how they navigate the rapidly changing Arctic.

The next time someone calls something 'as rare as a unicorn,' you can smile and think of the narwhal: a real animal, living right now, beneath the ice at the top of the world. No magic required.
