Safety: weaning about 20 days (3 to 4 weeks in one reference); a new hamster left alone 24 hours; Chinese hamsters live alone; spot-clean daily, full clean weekly for a small cage or every few weeks for a deep one, nest and hoard returned; adult Syrian 3 to 5 oz (85 to 140 g); humidity 40 to 60%; water 9 to 12 ml a day, no glass tube for a Syrian; wet tail fatal within 24 to 48 hours untreated; protein target figure removed. Legal: 48 states, the District of Columbia and New York City legal, Hawaii barred, Oregon unclear; some states name only the Syrian.
