The Naked Mole Rat Breaks Almost Every Rule We Have for Mammals
A rodent that lives past 37, feels no burn from acid, survives 18 minutes without oxygen, and has a queen. The naked mole rat is the strangest mammal we know of, and the cancer story is more complicated than you have heard.

Most animals that get called extraordinary are extraordinary in one direction. Fast, or big, or venomous. The naked mole rat is extraordinary in about six unrelated directions at once, which is why it has ended up in more laboratories than almost any other wild mammal.
It is a hairless, nearly blind, cold-blooded-ish rodent the size of your thumb that lives in the soil of East Africa. It also lives past 37 years, feels no pain from acid, survives 18 minutes with no oxygen at all, and organises itself like a termite colony. Each of those is a real finding with a paper behind it. One of them is more contested than the internet suggests.
It Has a Queen, and That Is Not a Metaphor
In 1981, Jennifer Jarvis published a paper in Science with the title "Eusociality in a Mammal". Eusociality is the ants and termites arrangement: one breeding female, overlapping generations, cooperative care of young, and a division of labour into castes. Before Jarvis, it was assumed no mammal did this.
Naked mole rats do. A colony has a single breeding queen, one to three breeding males, and everyone else. The non-breeders are not sterile, which is the important detail. They are reproductively suppressed, and if the queen dies, several of them will begin developing and fighting to replace her.
For forty years the mechanism behind that suppression was an open question. It was answered in 2026, in a Nature paper led by Khallaf and Lewin, and the answer is a smell. Queens are enriched in a low-volatility ester called isopropyl myristate, which is nearly absent in non-breeders. It is detected by olfactory neurons, it triggers avoidance in high-ranking animals, and it shifts prolactin and progesterone in non-breeders.
The experiment that seals it is elegant. Take a colony, remove the queen, and normally a succession fight begins. Instead, add isopropyl myristate daily, and succession never starts. Withdraw it and the aggression and reproductive competition begin. The colony was being held in line by a chemical the whole time.
Colonies have accents. Barker and colleagues showed in Science in 2021 that the naked mole rat's most common call, a soft chirp, carries a colony-specific dialect. The dialects are cultural rather than genetic: pups fostered into a foreign colony learn that colony's dialect, and the dialect shifts when the queen is replaced. Played recordings, mole rats respond preferentially to their own colony's accent.
The Cancer Story, Including the Part Usually Left Out
The popular version says naked mole rats are cancer-proof. The honest version is more interesting.
In 2013, Tian and colleagues published in Nature that naked mole rat fibroblasts secrete hyaluronan of extremely high molecular mass, more than five times larger than the human or mouse version. Remove it and the cells become susceptible to tumour formation. That gave a clean, satisfying, cell-intrinsic mechanism, and it is the version that spread.
Then in 2020, a team at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre led by Fazal Hadi published in Nature that naked mole rat cells can in fact be transformed. Infected with a virus, the cells multiplied and formed colonies readily, and injected into mice they produced tumours within weeks. That points somewhere quite different: not to cells that cannot become cancerous, but to a body environment that stops cancer developing in the first place.
And naked mole rats do get cancer. Necropsies from captive colonies have turned up axillary adenocarcinoma, gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma, metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma, nephroblastoma, lymphosarcoma, cutaneous haemangioma and chordoma, among others. The cases are genuinely rare, and the overall incidence remains negligible compared with other rodents. But "negligible" and "impossible" are different claims, and only one of them is supported.
The most accurate framing available is the one a 2021 review used as its title: resistant to developing cancer, or good at avoiding it? That question is still open.
No Pain From Acid, and a Chilli Caveat
Naked mole rat burrows are crowded, poorly ventilated and heavy with carbon dioxide, which acidifies tissue. In most mammals that means burning discomfort, because acid activates nociceptors directly.
Park and colleagues showed in PLOS Biology in 2008 that naked mole rats show no behavioural response to acid at all. They are the only vertebrate known to lack it. On top of that, they show no thermal hyperalgesia after inflammation, meaning an injured area does not become extra sensitive to heat the way yours does.
The capsaicin half is where popular retellings overreach. It is often written that naked mole rats cannot feel chilli. What the study found is that they do not show the usual pain behaviours, but their nociceptors respond vigorously to capsaicin, and their sensory neurons do express TRPV1, the capsaicin receptor. The receptor works. The signal arrives. Something downstream declines to turn it into pain behaviour. Saying they cannot detect capsaicin gets the mechanism backwards.
Eighteen Minutes With No Oxygen
A mouse in a zero-oxygen chamber dies in under a minute. A naked mole rat lasts 18 minutes and walks away without apparent injury.
Park and colleagues worked out how in Science in 2017. Under anoxia, the animal switches to anaerobic metabolism fuelled by fructose rather than glucose, actively accumulating fructose and metabolising it to lactate in the brain. Fructose metabolism bypasses the step where glucose-based glycolysis stalls without oxygen. Plants and some other tissues use this pathway. No other mammal is known to deploy it as a whole-body rescue.
The Aging Claim, and Why to Hedge It
This is the finding that made headlines, and it deserves a careful reading.
Gompertz's law says an animal's risk of dying rises exponentially with age. It holds across essentially every mammal studied. Ruby, Smith and Buffenstein compiled more than 3,000 naked mole rat lifespan records and reported in eLife in 2018 that the age-specific hazard of mortality did not increase with age at all, even at 25 times the age of reproductive maturity. A substantial share of the population was still alive at 30. Maximum recorded lifespan exceeds 37 years, extraordinary for a rodent the size of a mouse.
A flat mortality curve is a strong claim, and it drew a formal published critique in eLife in 2019 raising concerns about data skew and how the hazard was estimated across the observed lifespan range, with a response from the original authors. The dispute is on the record and unresolved.
So the defensible statement is that naked mole rat mortality does not rise with age anywhere near the way it does in other mammals, and that whether it is truly flat is contested. That is less punchy than "the non-aging mammal", and it is what the literature supports. Compare it with the immortal jellyfish, where the reset mechanism is real but "immortal" carries the same overreach.

Why Any of This Matters
The reason so many labs keep naked mole rat colonies is that each of these traits maps onto a human problem. Acid insensitivity is a lead on chronic pain. Fructose-driven glycolysis is a lead on stroke and heart attack, where tissue dies from oxygen starvation. High-molecular-mass hyaluronan is being tested in engineered tumour environments. Whatever suppresses aging-related mortality is the whole field of geroscience in one animal.
None of that required the animal to be perfect, which is worth remembering when the popular version rounds every finding up. It gets cancer, rarely. It detects capsaicin, without hurting. It ages, possibly, and slowly enough that we cannot yet tell. The real version is a rodent that has quietly solved four or five problems we have not, and the qualifications are where the actual science is.
