Do Dolphins Have Names? What the Research Actually Shows
Bottlenose dolphins really do use something like names for each other. The research behind that claim is narrower, and more interesting, than the headline.

You have probably heard some version of this: dolphins call each other by name. It shows up in documentaries, in captions, in every list of amazing animal facts ever written.
Claims that good usually shrink when you go looking for the study behind them.
This one does the opposite. The research is more specific than the pop version, and narrower than "dolphins have language." The narrowness is the interesting part.
What a Signature Whistle Actually Is
Every bottlenose dolphin develops one distinctive whistle of its own. It is not something the animal is born with. Calves learn theirs within the first year of life, and once the pattern is set it stays stable for decades.
The identity is not carried in the animal's voice. It is carried in the shape of the whistle, the way the pitch rises and falls over time. That distinction matters in a moment.
Signature whistles also are not a rare flourish. They make up roughly 50 percent of everything a freely interacting dolphin whistles. They are most of the conversation.
The Experiment That Made It Look Like a Name
Broadcasting your own identity is useful, but it is not a name. A name is something others use to refer to you. Two studies from the University of St Andrews went after that gap.
The first, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2013 by King, Sayigh, Wells, Fellner and Janik, looked for dolphins copying each other's signature whistles in the wild. They found copying in only 10 of 85 capture and release events, involving 12 animals.
Rare is the right result. If everyone imitated everyone constantly, the system would stop identifying anybody.
The revealing part was who copied whom. Pairs that copied had a mean coefficient of association of 0.8, against 0.4 for pairs that did not. Dolphins copied their closest companions: mothers and calves, and males in long term alliances. The copies were never exact either. On average 4.4 acoustic parameters differed between copy and original (range of 1 to 6), so a copy stayed audibly a copy rather than an impersonation.
The second study, published in PNAS the same year, ran the follow-up. King and Janik played wild dolphins off the east coast of Scotland synthetic versions of their own signature whistles, with every trace of the original animal's voice removed, alongside control whistles from strangers and from familiar neighbours.
Eight of 12 dolphins answered their own whistle by calling back. They did not answer whistles that were not theirs.
The voice-stripping is what makes this convincing. The researchers rebuilt each whistle from scratch, so nothing of the original speaker remained, and dolphins still recognised the pattern as being about them. Same trick as reading your own name in print. The identity is in the pattern, not in whoever is saying it.
What This Does and Does Not Mean
This is where the popular retelling runs past the science, so it is worth setting side by side.

That last line is not an outside critique. It is King and Janik's own caveat: an animal may learn that a particular call brings a companion closer without grasping the connection between the call and that individual.
Signature whistles are not a language. They are a learned label for one specific thing, which is itself rare outside human speech.
Twenty Years Later, They Still Remember
The second famous dolphin claim is the 20 year memory, and it holds up.
Jason Bruck tested it in Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2013 using 43 dolphins across six facilities, plus archived recordings of 20 more animals from the 1980s and 1990s. Because these dolphins had moved between institutions over the years, he could play an animal the whistle of a former tankmate it had not heard in anywhere from six months to 20.5 years.
Dolphins responded far more strongly to whistles of animals they once knew than to unfamiliar ones, and time apart made no measurable difference. Recognition at 15 or more years looked the same as recognition at one year, with no decay.
That is a recognition test, not a memory of shared experience. Bruck showed the whistle stayed filed away, not that the dolphin was reminiscing. Even so, it is the longest social memory documented in any non-human species.
The Mirror, and Why It Is Complicated
The third claim is self-awareness, and this one deserves more hedging than it usually gets.
In 2001, Diana Reiss and Lori Marino published a PNAS study on two captive-born male bottlenose dolphins at the New York Aquarium, aged 13 and 17. They applied temporary black ink marks roughly 6.4 cm across to spots the dolphins could not see without a reflection, along with sham marks applied using water-filled markers so the animals felt the same touch with nothing to see. Both dolphins spent more time at reflective surfaces when genuinely marked and turned to expose the marked area.
At the time, only humans and great apes had convincing evidence of mirror self-recognition. Dolphins were the first non-primates to show it.
Here is the part usually left out. The mark test is contested as a measure of self-awareness, and the disagreement is real science, not fringe objection.
Loth, Güntürkün, von Fersen and Janik reviewed the dolphin work in Animal Cognition in 2022 and criticised it for a lack of suitable controls, and for the subjective business of scoring a moving animal's behaviour as self-directed rather than social. Their own study did find dolphins inspecting their marked side while ignoring marks on other dolphins. But they were blunt: recognising yourself in a mirror does not by itself imply full self-awareness or consciousness.
Frans de Waal made a broader argument in PLOS Biology in 2019: the mark test pushes an all-or-nothing view in which a few species have self-awareness and the rest do not. Evolution rarely works that way. The test also leans on vision and self-touching, which quietly favours animals with hands.
Reiss and Marino said as much in 2001. Whether dolphins are capable of more complex self-awareness, such as introspection or attributing mental states to others, remains unanswered.
A 2018 follow-up by Rachel Morrison and Diana Reiss tracked two dolphin calves at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. One showed self-directed behaviour at a mirror at 5.5 months old. What They Do With the Names
A 2026 PNAS study gives the clearest sense yet of what these labels are for.
Alice Bouchard and colleagues combined decades of population records on Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in Shark Bay, Western Australia, with a playback experiment. They played 17 adult females the signature whistles of 11 adult males and watched by drone.
Females likely to be fertile swam away from the whistles of males with a history of aggressively herding females. Females who were not, such as those raising calves, reacted far less. The avoidance tracked each male's general record with the population, not just what he had done to that particular female.
That is what a name is actually good for. Not poetry, bookkeeping.
The Honest Version
Dolphins invent a sound that identifies them, keep it for life, learn each other's, use copies of it to address specific companions, remember it across 20 years of separation, and use it to decide who to keep away from.
